Seidler studied architecture under Gropius at Harvard and was Australia's only modernist architect of significance. Funny thing is, he was not from Australia and upon his arrival, never planned on staying. His mother asked him to come visit and design her a new house. One thing led to another and he became one of Australia's most prolific architects.

Kunsthaus Graz, another milestone in blobby architecture. Designed by Peter Cook and Colin Fournier, it looks organic and playful on the outside, but the inside spaces are somewhat forbidding and give any exhibition a tough job of dealing with the space itself.

The building also features the BIX light facade by Berlin architects realities:united. Media facades are slowly becoming more common, but this was a very early example.

project 365 has made me realized that it's not easy to keep with the standard.

everyday, i feel so lost. i have no clue what kind of photo should i take for the day.

so, architecture is my shortcut. however, to make an architecture photo to be meaningful or reasonably significant, it's easier said than done. i mean it.

what do i have to say about my photo for today?
- typical. very.

however, if we see the bright side of project 365, it lets us explore the arena of imagination.
i have to face the gladiator of skepticism to win the throne of creativity.

last but not least, a question to ponder, should i be comfortable with HDR?

Exotic Khmer Architecture at the Royal Palace

And the best rooftop design award goes to the Khmers. Just look at that beautiful rooftop. I like the little flare-things, but don't know what they're called. Aside from that, good attention to detail and different uses of colors.

Buildings like this were commonly seen in Cambodia, but mostly used for government establishments. Such buildings usually face east (although technically a building faces all directions), and have a spire and the little 'flares' at roof corners as you see. The spire here is a commonly photographed one, as it has a little Buddha face. This was their way of asserting that the his kind of architecture (also seen in Laos/Thailand) started with the Khmers.

This specific building is part of the Royal Palace at Phnom Penh and is called the Chan Chhaya Pavilion.

Bad Architecture II

You might wonder why I consider this bad architecture, so I try to tell you why:
What you see here is the facade of a primary school, designed by a famous german architect.
Enough? No?
O.k. at least in my humble opinion, schools should support or even serve children. This building just serves itself. It also falls in pieces after only a couple of years of usage. The architects don´t allow the necessary changes, since they regard this a violation of their copyrights.
It is really amazing, since the first impression of the design is quite positive, modern architecture. The amount of mistakes they have committed is absolutely amazing as well. For example it is very hard to spot the entrance of the building, windows can´t be opened, the main interior color is black, etc. pp.
I have to stop here, otherwise its going to be long list.
Just one more sentence: In my point of view, all Architecture and Design has to serve its users.If this rule is properly executed, its likely that the result will turn out to be elegant and visually pleasing.
But this doesn´t mean, all elegant and visually pleasing design, necessarely solve functional problems and serves human beings.
Just my two cents.

Some architecture details, as seen through my "Cenei Vario-Spiegel-Vorsatz". This photograph has been created with my old "Cenei Vario-Spiegel-Vorsatz". Since I liked the result I post it here.

The "Cenei Vario-Spiegel-Vorsatz" is an interesting device from the 1970s. (Ok, the name is a bit longish, but for German speaking people it gives some hint of what it's all about since it contains the German words for "variable", "mirror" and "attachment". The "Vorsatz" is a black tube which you can screw into the filter thread of your lens. The tube is telescopic and can be extended (to double its length). Inside there are lots of curved mirrors which project multiple images of what is around you into the frame. Depending on the focal length of you lens and the degree of the extension of the tube the effect the device produces can be quite different. To make the use of the "Vario-Spiegel-Vorsatz" even more flexible you can rotate the front part which contains the mirrors. This way you can precisely adjust the position of reflections in your photo. Pretty cool!
For my shot I combined the "Vario-Spiegel-Vorsatz" with my AF-S Micro NIKKOR 40mm 1:2.8 G. I haven't used the "Vorsatz" for many years (given that the 1970s are over...) but maybe I'll put it back into action from time to time.

La cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine est située dans le Palais du Trocadéro à Paris. Elle est composée de 3 départements :

- le département architecture (Institut français d'architecture et Centre des Hautes Etudes de Chaillot) chargé de valoriser l'architecture des 20è et 21è siècles,

-le département patrimoine (musée des monuments français) qui est un lieu consacré à l'histoire de l'architecture. Il rassemble les fonds de moulages, de dessins et de photographies des musées de sculpture comparée et des Monuments français ainsi que de nouvelles collections,

-le département formation avec l'Ecole de Chaillot

La Cité est à la fois un musée, un espace de débats et de rencontres, un lieu de diffusion, un centre de ressources et une école.

These 19th century Victorian homes are located in Old Town Historical Park in San Diego, California. They were originally located in other parts of the city but were dismantled and brought to the park for preservation. I love the vivid colors and the wonderful angles one often sees in Victorian architecture. This photo was shot mid-day from an extreme, low angle, giving it some wonderful shadows.

With this weeks theme Architecture the town i work in has a flood of new homes but not so many interesting buildings. This is the new Ability Centre being built in Whitby, Ontario, Canada the interesting part of this is the rounded steel girders along the front of the building!

Kunsthaus Graz, another milestone in blobby architecture. Designed by Peter Cook and Colin Fournier, it looks organic and playful on the outside, but the inside spaces are somewhat forbidding and give any exhibition a tough job of dealing with the space itself.

The building also features the BIX light facade by Berlin architects realities:united. Media facades are slowly becoming more common, but this was a very early example.

Aura Lily has been using Second Life to recreate the artifacts and architecture of ancient Egypt. Using maps drawn by one of Napoleon's artist engineers, she's also working on an accurate recreation of temples and buildings on the island of Philae. Aura's work is simply amazing, and I think the educational potential to use Second Life as an immersive way to explore ancient architecture and culture is limitless. She has no formal training in 3d modeling, yet she has a true passion for this ancient era and has done all of this work completely on her own. Simply incredible. Visit her amazing space in Second Life and experience it firsthand!
